Building a Powerful Personal Brand
Lately, I have been starting off the morning with my morning coffee and my nose a book. There is something so calming and renewing about it. Reminds me that there is so much to be hopeful for in the day the lies ahead.
I get to fill my head with fantastical nonsense or business tips to help propel me forward. I get to choose if I want to read affirmations or a tale of a real life hero.
The possibilities are endless.
This morning I am choosing to read all about marketing and branding. Now, I received this book yeas ago from a family member who knew I was interested in marketing and branding, but promptly put it on a book shelf. Not one of my prouder moments.
Nearly 6 years later, after having an urge to not only start a business but be successful and accomplished at it, Primal Branding is my go to.
Now, whether we know it or not, most of us are branding and marketing ourselves on a daily basis. Think Facebook Groups or Instagram. We want our tribe and our followers to come along side us, to be apart of our story, to cheer us along.
However, what a lot of us don’t realize is that without being intentional about our branding, when we post just to post and the message is off brand even if ever so slightly, our image can be tainted.
I have spent the morning reading about brands we all know a love, Nike, Barnes and Noble, Target, Heinz Ketchup, Disney…the list could go on. And what all of these brands have in common is that they are intentional about the decisions they make when it comes to their companies.
All too often I find that small businesses, myself included, are not intentional when it comes to making decisions about their companies and brands. We tend to throw caution to the wind and throw something out there to see if it sticks. Now, I am not one to say there is not a time and place for that, however generally I would say, in business, there is no place for that.
We can have the best skincare line, sell the best fitness routine, be the best dog walker in the country, but if we don’t have a brand that people can look to and recognize (whether that be a logo and icon or you yourself as the brand), no one will know who we are.
It is not enough to create the flag. You must have a nation willing to follow it.
After thinking about branding and the steps needed to make my own business successful, I thought about creating a list of ways to build a powerful personal brand. When I took to the internet, I realized that Forbes already created one, so I am going to list them below, as I couldn’t have said it better myself.
5 Way to Build a Powerful Personal Brand
Understand Your Value - Your value isn’t based on who you work for or your position at a job. It’s based on what you’re able to bring to the table. What is it that you do extremely well and who does it best serve? If you aren't specific about the kind of work you do or would like to do, people won't know to come to you for it.
Show Rather Than Tell - The more you understand your value, the easier it becomes to articulate and do it. Create a platform where people can see what you do. Don't hesitate to promote your accomplishments as they give you credibility. People can't connect with you if they don't know where they find you. Having a platform opens the door to more opportunities.
Understand How Much Your Value Is Worth - Most people tend to estimate their pricing based on how much they'd like to make. So they usually end up shortchanging themselves because their work brings a lot more value to an employer or client than they're charging for.
When thinking about your rates, make a list of things that would happen if a company didn't have you on their team. In order to properly position yourself, you have to know what problems the company is facing and how you are a part of the solution. What does a company stand to lose without having you? That is where your value lies.
Deliver on your value consistently and get testimonials - Don't be the only one talking about your value. Have other people do it too.
Increase your value through education - Once graduation is over and you have the degree(s), that’s when the real learning happens. You have opportunities to learn in hands-on environments with online courses, colleagues, mentors and offsite work events. Are you taking advantage of these opportunities to keep being among the best in your industry?
I love marketing and branding I think it is a powerful tool and when you appropriately can propel you forward like you have never seen before. Yes, there is a lot of work on the front end, but that is exactly what it should be, the front end. I am a firm believer in working smarter, not harder.
