What is Hand Salve?
If you have been around these parts for a while (thank you!!) you have seen my growing excitement for all natural products. Essential oils, coconut oil and shea butter, oh my!
My latest excitement? Salves.
A friend of mine first introduced me to Hand Salves sometime around Christmas. It smelled delicious and having no idea what it was, I decided to give it a try! I loved it so much I used every last oz that I could. I read the ingredient list, thought to myself, "I can do this!" and decided that I would try my hand making some.
I tinkered around the internet, found recipes that worked and some that didn't. Found scents that I liked and some that I didn't and finally came up with my own! I made a batch, tested it out on some very willing friends (bless you!) and stuck it up in the shop.
I realized something in all my excitement though. Not many people know what a hand salve is (I mean I didn't) so I thought I would provide a little education.
What is a Hand Salve?
Hand salve is thicker than a traditional lotion or cream. It uses wax to create a thick moisturizer for the skin.
Purpose of Hand Salve
Hand salves use natural ingredients that are known to heal, moisturize and protect. Beeswax is often used in hand salve to create a thick, protective layer over the skin. Hand salve is not meant for other areas of the body, especially the delicate skin on the face because the thick emollient may clog pores. Some hand salves contain anti-bacterial properties to soothe small cuts on the hands.
Now that you know a little about this crazy, crunchy, hippie stuff, you know you want to try it, right? It is over in the shop right now. Yes, buying this stuff will provide my family with a bit of extra income to keep our home running, but in all seriousness, I wouldn't be promoting products that I didn't believe in or use myself. In fact, I carry my 4 oz container with me where ever I go!
I am moving towards a more holistic, simple and organic lifestyle so with that in mind REMEMBER - You will always be able to pronounce all the ingredients used in all Blue Oak Farm products.
