Easy Do It Yourself All Natural Gel Air Freshener

We’d all like to have a nicely scented home, but is it really worth sacrificing our good health, and the health of our planet? If you are anything like me you didn’t think twice about using air fresheners, plugging them in and enjoying a “Tropical Breeze”. Unfortunately, after just a few moments of research I quickly learned that these easy go-to air fresheners could be damaging to my health and the health of my family.

Did you know that the residual chemicals in air freshening products are known to accumulate in continually increasing amounts in the body over time, which means when health consequences eventually occur, they’re almost never attributed to them? I didn’t!

Now, I am not one to really worry about things like this (maybe I should now!) but over these last few months I have started to change out things in my home to be more toxin-free when I can!

So what is in those store bought air fresheners?

Phthalates - Icky. Most phthalates have been linked to reproductive abnormalities, interfering with the production of testosterone and the National Resource Defense Council stated that phthalates in the air we breathe can lead to asthma and allergy symptoms even in only trace amounts. Whoa!

Naphthalene - Unfortunately, a majority of plug-in air fresheners brands contain a chemical known as naphthalene. It has been found to cause tissue damage and even lung cancer in laboratory rats and is suspected to have a similar effect in humans.

Formaldehyde - A well known human carcinogen. Need I say more?

Volatile Organic Compounds - VOCs are compounds that are used to help disperse scents in air fresheners, but these are harmful chemicals too.

Why Make Your Own Gel Fresheners?

Even if you are like me and only use these air fresheners occasionally (because let’s be real, those things are EXPENSIVE!)  studies have found that being exposed even just once a week raises the risk of developing asthma which is why it’s far better to make your own, than to subject yourself, your family and our environment to such a long list of potential hazards!

Freshen up your home naturally with simple gel fresheners. They are easy to make with simple ingredients, take little time and are much more cost effective than the store bought ones!

You can customize them with any scent and color you prefer and the process is so simple, you can easily make a bunch of air fresheners in just a few minutes.

Make one for every room in your home!

Supplies Needed

  • 2 packets unflavored gelatin (.25oz each packet) - I get mine here or at my local grocery store

  • 1 cup water

  • 1 tablespoon of salt (prevents mold…use it!)

  • 10-15 drops essential oil per jar - I use this.

  • 1-2 drops food coloring per jar

  • small glass jars (we used half-pint mason jars) - get them here!

  • small saucepan

  • whisk

Let’s Make Your Air Freshener!

  1. Bring 1 cup of water to boil in a small saucepan and 1 tbsp salt. Bring to a boil.
